Concert Memory
This was one of those situations where when Frank sent out the invitation to his home for a Poco show, I knew that I wanted to attend but there were so many things to consider. But my wife, Kim said that she thought it would be a great way to see Poco live, so we booked a hotel room and drove the six hours to Southern California. We killed four hours in Disneyland without the kids, took a nap, then headed for Frank’s house. We arrived about 30 minutes before the show and walked around uncomfortably as the guys ate and talked among themselves. At Kim’s urging, I introduced myself to Jack, who was very friendly, and when he found out about the website, asked me all kinds of questions and offered to add a link to it from his webpage. George Grantham was also very friendly but we hadn’t really left enough time to talk. Poco was soon setting up for the show.
It was everything we had hoped for. Poco unplugged was an incredibly intimate experience. Their set list was enjoyable and wandered a bit afield from recent shows. I was also pleased when they debuted some material from their still unreleased RUNNING HORSE album. Rusty’s ‘Forever’ was very special and I just loved Jack’s ‘Shake It.’ George Grantham’s work on that one just blew my mind. It didn’t sound like Poco but I knew that their willingness to release it signaled growth for the band.
During the break, I spoke with Paul to confirm a story I had been told by producer Jack Richardson a few weeks earlier. And I introduced myself to Rusty before leaving. Overall, it was one of the most memorable Poco experiences of my life.
