Concert Memory

I went to see Poco last night in Covington, Ky. with Steve Numbers and his son Derek . Firefall and Craig Fuller opened. Just as Pure Prairie League did the last couple of times, Firefall, with only original member Jock Bartley, blew our guys off the stage. Not that Poco wasn’t good, their song selection just wasn’t as memorable . Perhaps I’m too critical. Along with the usual set of Poco songs they did 3 new ones. ‘Heart Needs a Hand,’ ‘Never Loved Like This,’ & ‘Running Horse.‘ I think I told you I couldn’t hear George sing on the new cd and that was somewhat confirmed last night when he sang background on only 1 of 3 (running horse). They also had Jack sing a song Ty Herndon had a hit with but the title escapes me. After the show Rusty was his cool self until I gave him a couple of Japanese Poco lps I picked up for him sometime back. Then he was jovial and thankful. Paul was Paul. Jack looked at me like I was someone he should know but wasn’t quite sure. Of course, things went well with George. Rusty could take some pointers from Jock Bartley who seemed to be one of the nicest guys to meet. He actually offered conversation rather than having to coax it out like one has to do with Rusty sometimes. A cool thing happened after the show as I talked to this guy who grew up with Craig Fuller and Pure Prairie League. This older man walked out of the venue and across the street to his car and the PPL guy says, “see that guy. He hasn’t seen Paul Cotton in over 40 years and he used to play with Paul in The Mustwangs”. It was all I could do to stop myself from running over to the guy and talking to him. Later I remembered seeing Paul and some guy talking at the back of the venue and I think it was the same guy. Wished I could have met the guy. Rusty sounded like he blew out his voice the night before in Nashville and, as usual, he experienced amp problems. George was a powerhouse drumming and his vocals soared. Paul and Jack were great too. No surprises except the new songs sound better live and Running Horse has an extended steel solo that should have been on the CD.
