Concert Memory

This was the night that ultimately, I interviewed Paul for the Sound Waves cover story. Jon and I got there a bit early and were mingling with some Poco fans outside. Anyway, we go into the show, talk our way down front and have a great time. The curtain is closed before Poco is introduced, and we were then treated to the first “shaved head” Rusty, with a gorgeous Nudie-type jacket. It was very good, yet short set, opening for Pure Prairie League. After the set, more than half the crowd, many of whom sported Poco tee-shirts, left, giving PPL a very tiny audience for their “headlining” set. Just like the old days, I thought, when Poco would open and blow people away. So we went back to the bar area in the part of the hotel complex where the band was staying. It was in the bar that I really got a good handle on just how much work Rusty does on the road. he was busy making out check, finding out about travel arrangements the next day,a nd looked, frankly, very tired. But, he was still the friendly Rusty we have come to know. He excused himself and went off to bed at about 12:30. Paul and I retired to his room about a half hour later, did one of the most relaxed interviews that I have ever done, and Jon and I left about 3:30 am. This turned out to be Tim and Richard’s last show. Rusty told us about it that night but asked us to keep it quiet. He was very excited that George and Jack were coming back, but clearly enjoyed the commitment that Tim and Richard had made to the band.
