Concert Memory
I attended Cook College, now named ‘School of Environmental and Biological Sciences’ within the Rutgers University system, and was thrilled when it was announced that Poco would be playing at the gym.
My previous Poco shows were:
July 19, 1975 – Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ – Eagles and Seals & Crofts
July 1, 1976- Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Uniondale, NY- Stills-Young Band
July 8, 1976 – Calderone Concert Hall, Hempstead, NY – Natural Gas
I first met Debbie at a party on the nearby Douglass campus. What caught my attention was what she was wearing – a Poco shirt similar to the one I bought at my first Poco concert. You can certainly say the love of Poco drew us together.
I lived at the co-op dorm on the outskirts of the Cook campus. As Debbie and I left there for the show, she picked a flower from one of the bushes by the front door. We met her friends, a couple she shared classes with, and we were one of the first in line.
I had bought a new Canon FTb 35mm camera a month before and hoped to try my hand at some concert photos. Prior to that I had only used Kodak Instamatic cameras for picture taking.(do you remember ‘Flash Cubes’ 🙂 This was the first of only two times I took concert photos, the second being in Sept. 1980 Dire Straits at the Old Waldorf, San Francisco, CA.
I can’t really remember any musical highlights since I was at times focused on taking some photos. All I can remember is really enjoying the show as a whole, especially it being the first time down front for a concert.
Sometime during the show Debbie raised the flower toward the stage and Timothy grabbed it and put in on the end of his bass. You can see the flower in a couple of the photos.
After the show ended, the four of us hung around the back door hoping to see our heroes. The couple remembered that they had a handmade Poco Seven wall hanging (wood covered with green felt and raised painted horseshoe and letters – really nice). The boyfriend ran back to their dorm and returned with it. As the band eventually emerged from the gym, they presented it to them – Timothy gratefully accepting the gift. We got to thank them for the great show.
