Concert Memory

The 1986 show was my first Poco concert, and on my 27th birthday to boot! My girlfriend Holly had wanted to take me but I ended up taking her instead since she was a little short on funds. I remember reaching Main Street in Newark and getting caught in a massive traffic jam. Was the fair in town or was everybody in Newark a Poco fan ? It turned out that everyone in town(University Of Delaware students and townies !) just loved to cruise Main St. on weekends, like in the movie American Graffiti . Thankfully we got to the Balloon around 11, just as Poco was hitting the stage ! The club had a good turnout but wasn’t SRO since it was summer break for the university !(I went to later Balloon shows during school terms and could barely move in that club!). Holly and her friend Lucy enjoyed the show very much even though they were not as familiar with them as I was.( I had taped some songs to play for them on the car deck on the way down to give them a quick crash course!) After the show I suddenly saw Rusty in the audience as the club was clearing out and he signed my Inamorata album(“I hope you like this record, Jim”, it read). I wasn’t able to talk to Paul since he was already on the bus but did get to say a quick hello to Steve Chapman before we left for home.
