Concert Memory
I lived about a two drive away in Kitcheener, Ontario and was going to see Neil Young in the Stills Young Band. We didn’t know who the opening act would be and on the drive I remember saying that it would be good to see Poco as a suitable and compatible opener. This was the American Bicentennial Day, perhaps why the place didn’t sell out. The hall was a huge cavernous place, almost like an airplane hanger, huge. And the sound thusly sucked. Anyway, to my delight Poco were the openers, the only time I had the opportunity to see them, but because of the venue there was no intimacy and it was hard to enjoy it to the fullest. Stills Young seemed to be two solo shows where they alternated songs and I liked the Neil stuff best. At one point, someone let off a few cherry bomb fireworks which echoed louder than the band, and this caused Stills to urgently warn that people could get hurt so stop setting them off, to which Neil added “Hey man, it’s the bicentennial” as a sarcastic response to Stills. It was only a week or two later Neil left the tour. Wish I’d seen them in a better location, and as headliners.
