POCO KEEPS LEGEND INTACT AT ROXY

by Dave Howell, Allentown Morning Call

Sunday night at the Roxy Theater in Northampton, more than a few people were probably startled to see the members of Poco with gray hair and wearing their shirts out of their jeans to hidelarger waistlines. But the 175 Poco fans – most members of the real Woodstock generation – had not reason to be embarassed, because the band they began listening to 25 years ago put on a great show.

It was a different Poco than the mellower, more country-flavored band from the early ’70s, mostly because founding member Rusty Young, who now bears a remarkable resemblance to Dr. McCoy of Star Trek, leads the group instead of only providing background steel guitar, dobro and banjo. Young began the 105-minute show on electric guitar, later switching to his single and double pedal steel guitars, playing them like lead instruments, perhaps in a way God never intended, but delighting the crowd.
