Concert Memory
I was at the show in Richmond, Virginia. It was a fabulous show at the Richmond Coliseum. I remember it as a triple bill: Charlie Daniels, someone else, and Poco. The first opener might’ve been Capricorn artist Grinderswitch. At any rate, I was a freshman at Virginia Commonwealth University, and I recently had begun volunteering at the campus radio station, WJRB-AM. For a geeky kid from the ‘burbs, this station was a godsend–I had a place to hang out, I listened to new and old music, and I learned an immense amount about life, music, love, and all. I remember going to the concert with a fellow freshman English class girl. Big crush on her, but obviously not reciprocated–it was the only date I had with her. After the show, though, we met two roadies from Poco who invited us back to the Holiday Inn on West Franklin Street. Trepidatiously I agreed. We went (I think they were more interested in my date, a short, beautiful girl with tremendously long, straight hair–so typical for ’74!). When we went up to the floor where the band was, the roadies were running down the hall with a soda-acid fire extinguisher. One of ’em asked me to hold the exit door open for him to make his getaway. All in all, a fun night!
