Concert Memories

On August 6, 1970 Poco played the Festival For Peace at Shea Stadium, Flushing, New York. There was no field seating allowed; I sat in the 28 row field level between home and third. My first Poco concert. There were 21 acts – among them were Creedence Clearwater (they closed their show with Midnight Special), Janis Joplin, Paul Simon and Johnny Winter. I have the entire list if you need it. My favorite memory of that show is during El Tonto, Festival crew threw food into the crowd – it was a long day. I distinctly remember catching oranges and a bag of potato chips that some of the crowd had passed back. When Epic Records ran ads for their second album, the copy read “Poco turned the Festival For Peace into a picnic.” Indeed.

I’m sorry but you don’t know me from adam but I happen to see your Web site on POCO and what an incredible job you did!  In particular I saw that you had info on POCO’s set at Shea Stadium.  It was not only my first concert but the reason why I went was to see POCO for the first time.  I guess it was the first and last time I saw them with Jim Messina too.  Since then (since I lived on LI at the time and now in NJ) I had seen them many times with Paul Cotton.

I remember at Shea that when they did ‘Nobody’s Fool’ jam El Tonto de Nadia;the upper level of the stadium actually started to bounce when everyone clamped their hands with Richie amazing!  The only other time that happened is when CCR played at the end of the night.
