Messina puts a backing group together consisting of Larry Simms (bass) and Merle Bregante (drums) formerly of the Sunshine Company. he adds Al Garth (Fiddle, Horns) and Jon Clarke (Horns). 1974

The relentless pace forces the band off the road in the spring of 1974 for a much needed rest. They re-emerge late in the year with perhaps their best recorded effort, MOTHER LODE. Unfortunately, it does not contain a hit single and the band begins to lose steam.

Confronted with an uncomfortable situation within the band, Al Garth departs. Vince Denham is his replacement on horns. Richard Greene of Seatrain joins on violin, Jack Lenz on keyboads, Steve Forman on percussion joins the touring band. Messina takes some time off to deal with personal problems leaving Loggins to rehearse the band and run the show. When Messina returns, Loggins decides to maintain control. The bloom is off the rose. They cut an album of oldies covers to mark time and it flops on the charts.

With the band having essentially run its course, the duo decide to part company. After meeetings with their management in January, they line out a farewell tour to say goodbye to their fans. They form a new touring group consisting of holdovers Jon Clarke on horns, Vince Denham on horns with newly hired Willy Ornelas on drums, Doug Livingston on keyboards, and George Hawkins on bass. During tour rehearsals, Loggins slices his wrist, cutting a tendon. He is unable to play guitar and they hire Woody Chrisman to play guitar instead.

1979

After a nearly three-year break, Messina returns to the stage to support his first solo album, OASIS. It is a disappointment and the tour never really gains much steam. Messina’s backup band consists of Wayne Nelson (B), Jim Studer (K), Craig Thomas (H), Tony Moreno (D), Jeff Elliot (Trumpet), Ron Green (perc). Before the year is up, Wayne Nelson leaves for the Little River Band.
