1974

Richie Furay joins with Chris Hillman and J.D. Souther in a new band called the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band or SHF for short. They put together a backing band that includes ex-Manassas members Al Perkins, Paul Harris and ex-Domino Jim Gordon. This short-lived supergroup was a major disappointment to Richie, who ends his tenure with them after his two-album commitment to David Geffen ends early in 1975.

1976

After taking a year off for the first time in his professional career, Furay assembles a band after he declines Al Perkins’ offer to join Mason Proffit. Jay Truax (b), John Mehler (d) and Tom Stipe (k) of Love Song join him to form the Richie Furay Band. They record Furay’s first solo album for Asylum Records. When it is time to promote it on the road, Furay assembles a touring band of Truax, Stipe, Mehler, Bob Wall (g), David Diggs (k) and Alan MacDougal (perc). It’s back to opening act status and the band struggles. By October, Furay has replaced Wall with Virgil Beckham on guitar. Furay finally takes them off the road to re-tool them.

Furay wants to push this album up the charts and tours aggressively across the country, this time in mostly clubs and small halls. Virgil Beckham decides not to tour so Furay recruits Charlie Crews to replace him on the road. While the shows are uniformly excellent, most reviewers are not that impressed as the national music scene is changing.

Furay forms United States Rock with Grantham (d), Virgil Beckham (g), Hadley Hockensmith (g), Billy Batstone (b) Although USR manages to record some great demos, Furay backs out of the project when Atlantic Records tries to restrict the religious tone of some of his lyrics.

Furay now tours solo as an acoustic act, occasionally with a keyboard accompaniment. His stage act consists almost exclusively of his Christian songs.

In July, Furay participates in private Buffalo Springfield reunion at Stills’ Ranch in Encino. It results in a couple rough recordings and a promise to get together they following year.

1987

Furay again attends a private Buffalo Springfield reunion in the summer, but Neil Young fouls the attempt by not bothering to show up. In addition, Furay’s guitar is damaged in transit. It proves to be the last attempt at a Springfield reunion until they are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a decade later.

1989-1990

Furay participates in Poco reunion project (see Poco 1989-1990)

1991

Furay resumes occasional shows, primarily for the Summer Harvest Crusade in Southern California.
